Is Innovation Fair? Andrew Keen Says No

March 15th, 2010 by cgseo
Andrew Keen is no stranger to controversy. He has irritated bloggers by equating Web 2.0 with communism and enraged citizen journalists with his best selling book, Cult of the Amateur: How Today’s Internet is Killing Our Culture . Naturally when I saw Keen’s core conversation “Is Innovation Fair?” on the SXSW program, I knew it would incite lively discussion. Sponsor SXSW and the term “read-write web” are perhaps the antithesis of what Keen has become known for. While we as a publication (and often as a community) celebrate the participatory culture of Web 2.0, Keen sees the rise of amateur publishers as the fetishism ...

First Day Back At Work = First Day Sick

March 14th, 2010 by Jacqui
Seriously I was off for a few days these past weeks relaxing and chillaxing at home and I was fine health-wise and everything well I was treating a problem that I had before but I am shocked to say that today since it was my first day back at work I got the sniffles (i.e. cold and flu) and now my nose is annoying the hell out of me, one nostril I can breathe in (thank god! knock on wood) and the other is either clogged or runny and it annoys the hell out of me, because it makes me develop a headache.  I took ...

Big Changes Are Coming to Digg: More Power to Publishers, Less Power to Top Diggers

March 14th, 2010 by cgseo
Last night, during Digg ’s annual SXSW party, Digg’s CEO Jay Adelson announced a set of significant changes to Digg. Among the changes Adelson announced are a streamlined submission process, a personalized homepage, an unlimited amount of topic pages, a new commenting system and better curation tools. Earlier this morning, we got a chance to sit down with Adelson to discuss these changes in greater detail. Some of these changes will surely be extremely controversial in the Digg community and might also make some publishers who rely on Digg’s traffic a bit nervous. Sponsor It’s hard to underestimate the influence these changes will have ...

For anyone in this business who isn’t at SXSW in Austin, Texas this week, pretty much every social media channel feels like sitting next to a high school clique loudly talking about a party you weren’t invited to. Salo-O-n!

March 14th, 2010 by ansam518
My friend, Arwa, sent me this picture by BBM earlier today Two remarks: Why Salon spelled with س and not ص What is هوت النفط? Then after few minutes she sends the English version of it Again, two remarks: Why Salon is spelled “Saloon“? The Hot Oil explains it all, which was written somehow in Arabic (lost in translation a bit) as Hot Petroleum! Oh and believe me… there are more in there that I am ignoring in this hilarious ad LOL! Thanks Arwa

Souk Al Kabeer’s fire

One minute we were at our tables working, next the lights went off and we all gathered in the reception area, thinking that this was a maintenance procedure although I was really concerned for the servers (which are on UPS) thank God! If it wasn’t for the personal “chauffeur” we wouldn’t have known that the basement was on fire – by coincidence I swear! Stolen Credit Card – Again

It seems Dubai has turned into the Mecca of Credit Card thieves and credit card fraud, I got a call from the bank late Thursday night if I made transactions in Abu Dhabi, Hong Kong, and a few online transactions. The amount was 460 KD, I told them I only used my Credit Card once in an ATM in Dubai at a National Bank of Dubai ATM in the Mall. The Best Sites for Jobs in Dubai & Beirut

Dubai: Dubizzle:   A portal for jobs and real estate in Dubai.  This site allows you to contact employer directly. Last week I did two things to my FJ Cruiser, the first thing was getting a tint and the second thing was installing the sound system I had previously posted about. March 14th, 2010 by Jacqui
Although the show has been cancelled I couldn’t help but want to write about it since it was one of the new shows that were introduced this season on ABC and one of the first that got cancelled for not bringing in too much ratings.  Unfortunately it could’ve been something had it not been for the cliched story-lines. This show basically talks about 3 women who possess unique powers and how they meet each other in the village of Eastwick, a village that is not oblivious to a little bit of supernatural stuff going around in it.  Think, Charmed but without the sisterhood of real life ...

First Woman Judge in Qatar

March 14th, 2010 by intlxpatr
I am delighted to hear that Qatar has appointed its first female judge. I have to points of contention with this article. First – while I want women to have the same opportunity to be judges as men, I do not believe that because they are women, they can solve family rows better. I believe some female judges may be better than some male judges, but I don’t believe women will be better with family issues just because they are women. Women have agendas, too. Second, one female judge does not fill a void. It sets a precedent. It breaks new ground. It IS a great ...

Review: Percy Jackson & The Olympians – The Lightening Thief

And they’re not happy: Zeus’ lightning bolt has been stolen, and Percy is the prime suspect. Even more troubling is the sudden disappearance of Percy’s mother. As Percy finds himself caught between angry and battling gods, he and his friends embark on a cross-country adventure to catch the true lightning thief, save Percy’s mom, and unravel a mystery more powerful than the gods themselves. A new twist on Greek Mythology, Percy Jackson is thrown ...

365 Day 44

March 13th, 2010 by teagirl
I spent all day avoiding this power point. I just didn’t feel like doing anything work related at all this weekend. Though I am pretty excited about this project because it’s the first time I’m doing it with kids,  I find myself anxious for the exact same reason. Wish me luck! [...]

FaceBook Administration! ENOUGH is ENOUGH!

March 13th, 2010 by Chikapappi
I received a link from my sister on Facebook called “ALLAH” and I was disgusted by what I read and NO I will not share the link with you people here! an SOB claims to be Allah – God and recites Quran verses in a sick way.. problem is this person knows Quran! I mean he – she sounds intellectual (although this group and what’s on it are signs of losing it). I tried searching for an email to contact FB administration and in spite of the numerous “report abuse” hits I’ve done since yesterday, the group is still up and the fans number is  increasing ...

Back from the dead – Part 2

March 13th, 2010 by Hitman1
This is going to be my second attempt to bring my blog out of the grave I dug for it… for some reason I seem to be not able to keep it alive… I blame it on 1) having World of Warcraft (PC Game) take a big chunk of my computer time, 2) Starting to microblog on twitter and Facebook, and 3) Just overall laziness.

Recommended – L’Oreal Beach Creme

March 13th, 2010 by ansam518
I got used to short hair for a long time, and now that I have long hair.. its just straight! Boring? Well not with L’Oreal Beach Creme! Basically, after I wash my hair I take some of that creme and rub it in, blow dry it or let it air dry. It gives a windswept beach look with tousled finish… no visible residue! Oh and that peach fragrance… hmmm!!! I LOVE IT Only problem is I cant find it anywhere now… so if you know where I can find it, please let me know

March 13th, 2010 by MBH
It's Saturday afternoon. I'm watching CSI on TV. It's 16:48.Mobile phone rings; an unknown number. Hmmm.Me: "Hello?"Caller: "Hi, I'm here for the sugar." (Indian accent)*pause on my end**I listen to the background noise to see if this is a joke. I hear street noise and a kid screaming* Me: "I'm sorry... what?!"Caller: "How much is the sugar?"Me: "Sorry, what sugar? Who do you want?"

Robin Hood – Trailer 2

March 13th, 2010 by Marzouq
I think that Russel Crowe is a jerk, but he is also a phenomenal actor, probably one of the best at portraying whatever character he chooses. Now he has taken the role of Robin Hood, the last Robin Hood I remember was with Kevin Costner back in the 90s, and then there were Men in Tights, but that was just funny. Aside from those movies, this is taking Robin Hood into an Epic film, as some critics are already saying it, its going to be another Gladiator. I still watch Gladiator every once in a while and I still get moved by that movie, something ...

Buying a Car the Civilized Way

March 13th, 2010 by intlxpatr
“Did you know USAA has a car buying service?” AdventureMan asked me. Well, yes, sort-of, but I’ve been not wanting to think about buying a new car with all the house-buying stuff and paper-filling out stuff and packing stuff and making lists. On the other hand, every day I have to rent a car is money down the drain. “I’ll just check it out,” I thought to myself. It was so easy. You go online and tell the car buying service where you live and what you want to buy. They send your name and phone number and e-mail (since I don’t want car salespeople calling me ...

Créme de la Créme

March 13th, 2010 by Confashion
If you didn't get the chance to go to Créme boutique's summer exhibition today, you may have missed out on more than a few chances to buy the best pieces for casual outings and more. The selection of jeans was just fabulous. Exactly what we have been missing in this market, great quality luxe denim from MIH and James jeans: boot-cut, boyfriend, skinny, straight, wide leg... you name it, they had it. Plus they were selling cute and fun dresses and tops from Ashish and Tata-Naka (great for parties!). Now if you have missed it, I have some good news for you, follow Créme's ...

Upcoming Movies – Prince of Persia and Iron Man 2

March 13th, 2010 by Marzouq
Two movies that I am really looking forward to and have been waiting for them for a while now. Prince of Persia has been quite for some time now and its coming up at the end of May. Iron Man 2 just released the second trailer which was fantastic, leaves me wanting a hell of a lot more. When ever there are movies that I have high expectations for I try not to watch the trailer for them so I won’t know anything when I walk in, but I couldn’t help seeing the Iron Man 2 trailer. I know the basic story of Prince of ...

TOK – Again ;-)

March 13th, 2010 by ansam518
I went to TOK again yesterday for lunch with friends and was able to take more pictures this time So I snapped pictures of the entrance and the different sections of the venue this time It was a bit quiet when we first got there at around 1:00PM. We paid KD1.5 entrance fee per person (keep in mind that the minimum charge is KD5 per person also), KNet was not working -which is okay, since I had cash on me… and I usually dont *whew*- Anywho… The place wasnt crowded yet, so I was pretty comfortable walking around with my camera and snapping ...

Network Access Points

March 13th, 2010 by Marzouq
There are a lot of access points out on the market, and I have tried quite a few, been through 2 Netgear, 2 Linksys, 1 Belkin, and 3 D-Link. Out of all them I would avoid Belkin, probably the worst out of all the products, was horrible out of the box, worse support and I would avoid all their products period. Linksys are good but not what it used to be, I still prefer the older models then the new consumer models. Netgear is nice when its working but after a while it would hang, I would have to plug it and unplug it, and ...

No official details have been released for this helmet but carbon fiber helmet is made the same way as the Formula One spec helmet. Its called RX-7 RC for Racing Carbon, same as the GP-6 RC with all the nifty features. Based on factory rumors it takes about 22 hours to make one helmet, ...

[Guilty Purchase] HP Mini 210

March 13th, 2010 by Jacqui
I didn’t mean to go to InfoConnect this year but I thought why not check it out on it’s last day in the morning so I grabbed my sister along with myself and headed out there early in the morning and it was crowded but not that huge crowd that you can’t see where you’re going.  As what pretty most of the bloggers out there said it wasn’t that great of an exhibition but there was this one thing that I bought that is sort of like a guilty secret of mine. At this one booth, I saw that they were selling the HP Mini 210, ...

Will Google’s Cloud be a Cozy Nest for Aviary?

March 13th, 2010 by cgseo
Aviary , the online creative platform is a visionary tool. When it launched a few years back, the irony of a Flash based Photoshop competitor was, well, ironic. With the launch of Aviary in Google’s App Marketplace , we can say that the company is close to making lightening strike twice, this time around creating a home for the creative professional and their most important assets. We want this to work – so we ran it through the paces. Here we got a front-line view on where cloud app meets cloud. We looked forward to counting the pixels that get wasted in the process. ...

What Google Will Do in China (SXSW Presentation)

March 13th, 2010 by cgseo
Kaiser Kuo presented today at SXSW about Google in China. He spoke about how the Google situation will impact Chinese Internet users, other companies and the Chinese government. In the presentation, Kuo (who also spoke to ReadWriteWeb a week ago) clarified how censorship in China works. Contrary to popular belief, it is not the Great Firewall that has the most impact in China – but something China calls “self-discipline.” Kuo also discussed what the next moves will be from Google, since he believes that the ball is in Google’s court and Beijing won’t push the situation. OneLogin: Enterprise-Class Security Services and OpenID For The Small and Medium Sized Business

March 13th, 2010 by cgseo
We’re seeing a lot more discussion on the topic of single-sign on for SaaS environments. The issue is becoming more important as security emerges as a top concern for companies considering making the move to cloud-based environments. OneLogin is a new company that offers single sign-on, cloud-based service that allows for small and mid-sized companies to enjoy the same level of security as large enterprise companies. Sponsor Most small companies do not deploy security methods that employ SAML , (Security Assertion Markup Language) an XML-based standard for exchanging authentication and authorization data between security domains. It’s expensive to deploy. Open-source tools do exist but ...

Smartphone Users Want Mobile Coupons, Barcode Scanners & Location-Aware Ads

March 13th, 2010 by cgseo
Once upon a time, smartphones were mostly about connecting busy professionals with their email accounts while on the go. Now that smartphones have reached the mainstream consumer market, however, people are looking for more than just email access – and a surprisingly large number of smartphones hardly ever leave their owners’ homes. According to a new study from Web analytics firm Compete, 74% of smartphone owners now primarily use their devices for personal reasons, and they often spent the most amount of time with the device at home. Sponsor As we noted last October , when they leave their homes, a lot of consumers ...

Chevrolet Blends Mobile and Desktop Augmented Reality at SXSW

March 13th, 2010 by cgseo
Everyone has been talking about how this year’s SXSW will be the “year of location” as Foursquare and Austin-based Gowalla go head-to-head in a location-based battle royale . Location, however, is not the only emerging technology that will be on display in Austin; American auto maker Chevrolet announced it will be debuting new augmented reality promotions at SXSW this year. Sponsor Festival attendees can download the Chevy iReveal application on the iPhone which will allow them to participate in a scavenger hunt-like game that blends augmented reality with location-based functions. A map in the application shows the location of Chevy vehicle promotions around Austin ...
